The following students were trained to their respective degrees by Master Rudy W. Timmerman. They are listed here despite the fact that some no longer train with him due to WKSA policy. Master Timmerman's Family Tree gives an overview on all students who were recommended for promotion to Black Belt by Master Timmerman, regardless of their present affiliation.
Kwan Jang Nim Kevin Janisse:
Kwanjang Nim Janisse has studied with me since
1985 and opened his first school in Charlevoix, MI in 1990
which is now under the leadership of his student SBN Rich Wojan.. At his promotion to 4th dahn, Kevin was also named "WHFS International Instructor of the Year". Kwanjang Nim Janisse is currently running another school in Portland Oregon
and assists me in teaching NKMAA seminars. Kwanjang Nim Janisse has also received the "NKMAA Black belt of the Year"
and "Instructor of the year awards.
Kwan Jang Nim Rhonda MacLeod:
While I train many Masters, Kwanjang Nim Rhonda MacLeod is the first student I graded from White Belt to Master Level. During her training, Rhonda distinguished herself by winning four World Kuk Sool Championships. Kwanjang Nim MacLeod, while she trained with me, was my right hand person, and our school owes her a big debt of gratitude. Her skills with teaching children were phenomenal, and many of our black belts received their early training from Master MacLeod.
Master MacLeod stopped training with me in 2002, in order to pursue her goal of attaining a Masters Degree in Physio. Just before leaving for the University of Toronto, Master MacLeod married one of our students, and she is now Mrs. Rhonda Matthews. I, and the members of my school will never forget her countless hours of dedication to our school, and we sincerely hope she will return to continue training because she is a true credit to the martial arts
Sabum Nim Jonathan Simonds:
Master Simonds was trained to fourth degree Black Belt by Master Timmerman over a span of nearly twenty-two years and became the second Black Belt to be certified by him. When Master Timmerman changed his schools from Kong Shin Bup Hap Ki Do to Kuk Sool Won, Mr. Simonds stopped training, and Master Timmerman purchased a WKSA license agreement for the Michigan school and marketed the school with great results. After SBN Simonds returned to training, he bought out Master Timmerman's interest in the Michigan school in 1997. As a WKSA policy to take charge of all schools, Mr. Simonds decided to train directly under Grandmaster Suh,
In Hyuk and no longer trains with Master Timmerman.
Sabum Nim Normand Larocque:
Sabum Nim Larocque, like Master Timmerman, was a student of Grandmaster Pak,
In Shyuk and has a very successful school in Rouyn Noranda, Quebec. After Grandmaster Pak left the area, Mr. Larocque ran his school as an independent just as Master Timmerman had done. Knowing of this situation, Master Timmerman spoke to Mr. Larocque about joining the WKSA. When Mr. Larocque showed an interest, Master Timmerman traveled to Rouyn in order to work with him on the Kuk Sool curriculum and prepare him for 4th dahn certification in WKSA.
Observations by Master Timmerman:
In order to maintain total control over all Kuk Sool Black Belts, the WKSA has a policy to take charge
of all dealings with school owners and Black Belts. Producing Black Belts is a feeder program for the
WKSA, and Masters or school owners have little or no control over their own students. It is my
firm belief that this policy breaks the normal chain of command in martial arts and breeds disloyalty
that is sure to backfire someday. This trend in WKSA politics is but one of the reasons why
a number of school owners left Kuk Sool.
Sabum Nim Jelte De Graaf:
Sabum Nim De Graaf is the president of the NHA (Nederlands Hap Ki Do Association). He has actively promoted Hap Ki Do in Holland, and he had numerous articles written about him in professional magazines. Sabum Nim De Graaf recently traveled to Canada to test for his fourth Dahn and was promoted by Grandmaster Timmerman upon the completion of his
grueling test.
Sabum Nim Rod Wilson:
Sabum Nim Wilson also began his studies as a young man (age five) at our school and received his early training from KJN Rhonda. During his younger years, Rod was one of the best Junior competitors around, and he earned no less than three World Championships. Rod is one of the very few students who also earned a first dahn in Kong Shin Bup, and he passed the
grueling test hands down. Rod unfortunately had to quit training in order to attend Western University. We miss him.
